A convicted felon was charged with violating an order of protection for sending threatening text messages to an ex-girlfriend, said Hyde Park police Lt. Robert Benson.

Robert Ruiz, 39, was charged with aggravated family offense, a felony.

"He was sending text messages to (an) ex-girlfriend who was protected under a family court order of protection," Benson said of Ruiz. The texts were threatening in nature.

Ruiz was arrested around 2 a.m. on Friday, Benson said.
